Azkals' captain defends teammates vs raps

Amid controversy involving two players of the Philippine national football team being charged with sexual harassment, Azkals team captain Aly Borromeo defended his teammates, saying their behavior during the alleged locker room incident was completely normal.

“When we’re always inspected by a match commissioner, the team is doing pre-game rituals, people are lively, they’re always talking, there are jokes, there’s banter going around, it’s very magulo actually,” Borromeo said in an interview with ABS-CBN News.

“So when she calls each player – he or she – when a match commissioner calls each player, the player goes up to her with an ID, usually holding the jersey as well, and presents what we have to present, and sometimes some players are not wearing shorts, or just in shorts or underwear per se.”

Formal complaint

This being the usual scene in the locker room before each game, Borromeo said the team’s encounter with Asian Football Confederation (AFC) match commissioner Cristy Ramos was “normal,” but clarified “there was no harm intended towards [her].”

Borromeo is referring to the alleged incident detailed in the formal complaint of Ramos against Azkals members Lexton Moy and Angel Guirado.

Ramos filed a sexual harassment case against both players for “disrespecting” her during a pre-game check before the team’s match against the Malaysian Tigers last February 29 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

In the formal complaint, Ramos said Moy “stood by my right side and said in a loud voice, ‘Must be a B cup,’ to which the players laughed loudly.”

Ramos also cited Guirado for “[standing] in front of me purposely just wearing his briefs and made no attempts to wear shorts or cover his underwear.”

'No disrespect'

Borromeo said that his teammates’ behavior and state of undress during their “pre-game rituals” were “normal” considering the circumstances Ramos had detailed in her complaint.

“I don’t think there’s any disrespect towards her at all,” Borromeo said. “Kasi the case is when the match commissioner comes in, she calls out each player individually, and usually, before that, players are doing their own thing and it’s very noisy, it’s magulo in the locker, players don’t want any tension, so music’s playing, very magulo.”

“So I guess being the only woman in the room... and I don’t know if Lexton Moy was actually pertaining to her. But speaking on behalf of Lex, there was no harm intended towards her at all.”

While Borromeo was not in the room when the incident happened, he said Guirado wearing only his underwear in the presence of a match commissioner was also “nothing new.”

'Not new'

“It’s not new in the world of football, and especially Angel is from Europe so he’s the one walking around the locker room always [naked],” he said.

“Ako naka-shorts, hindi naka-jockies, pero the Europeans mostly, are very, they’re like that eh. They’re walking around in jockies lang, it’s normal.”

Despite these behavior and cultural differences, Borromeo insisted it was not the intention of his teammates to disrespect Ramos.

“As team captain and being a part of the Azkals, we don’t condone sexual harassment at all, so like I said, with Lex’s words and Angel, who can’t speak a word of English, there was no harm intended towards Cristy Ramos.” -- Report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
