Filipino boxer Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao gave credit to his conqueror, unbeaten Timothy Bradley Jr., but was admittedly frustrated with the American’s game plan during their 12-round encounter.
Bradley scored the upset of the year when he defeated Pacquiao via split decision, 113-115, 115-113, and 115-113 in their World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight clash at the MGM Grand Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
In his ringside interview and again in the post-fight press conference, Pacquiao said he respected the judges’ decision and gave credit to Bradley.
“One-hundred percent I believe that I won the fight. The decision has already been done, so you have to give credit to Bradley,” he said.
“I don’t even remember if he hurt me with even one punch,” Pacquiao said, then laughed before adding, “Amazing what the result is.”
But in an interview with ESPN, Pacquiao was visibly frustrated with the result of the bout, especially given the way Bradley fought.
“I’m very surprised. I’m very surprised,” he said to ESPN’s Bernardo Osuna.
“He’s running. In his fight, in all his fights, he never runs, he’s always coming inside, coming inside and fighting toe-to-toe,” Pacquiao added.
“Then I’m telling him to fight toe-to-toe, I’m trying to knock him out, and I always hurt him.”
Pacquiao said he wanted to knock out Bradley, which was why he threw power punches in every round.
In an interview on “The Buzz,” Pacquiao again expressed his frustration.
“Before the fight, he was telling the media that he’s going to fight toe-to-toe with me, he’s going to fight inside, gusto n’yang magpalitan kami ng mga suntok,” Pacquiao said.
“Tapos tumatakbo-takbo s’ya.”
Pacquiao was in clear control of the bout, especially in the middle rounds, when he repeatedly hurt Bradley with powerful straight lefts.
Bradley was able to steal some of the later rounds, but many at ringside felt Pacquiao had done more than enough to deserve the victory.
Indeed, most boxing analysts felt Pacquiao was robbed of the win.
Pacquiao has said he wants to have a rematch with Bradley, possibly this November.
“Absolutely, no problem. I’m willing to rematch him,” Pacquiao said in a ringside interview.
Bradley was so confident leading up to the bout that he printed promotional materials for a November 10 rematch, and following the fight, he confirmed that he was “absolutely” going to give Pacquiao a shot.
“I definitely have to give him a shot to let him earn his title back from me. This is boxing, and we gotta do it again,” Bradley said.
